Effective April 17th, due in part to the current government administration’s further intrusion into our private lives with their new banking regulations, we are forced to make some changes in the way we conduct business. In short, we no longer accept payments for our services using PayPal, Zelle, or Venmo.  I won’t go into the ridiculousness of the new regulations but suffice it to say, we are not happy about them!  Going forward, checks, CASH, or major credit cards only!

We also are now offering a discount for BOTH checks and CASH on the day a project is completed. We will also accept a copy of the front and rear of a check prior to 5 pm on the same day and it will qualify for the discount price.

Be it Woodworking, Engraving, Laser cutting, Home Repairs, Plumbing, Electrical & Carpentry, I am available. If you have items that need attention, I’d be happy to stop by and take a look for you.

Just give me a call or send a text to 484.948.6696, reply to this, or email george@JustLetGeorgeDoIt.com and I’ll set it up.

Also, if by chance you are interested in renting an RV, we now have three available.  Two Motorhomes. One 32 ft, one 31 ft model. One Mercedes 4X4 Adventure Campervan. Please visit GeorgeWhittaker.com for all the details or give me a call.

I’ve been asked over and over, “just what does under your roof mean?” From basement floors to your ceilings on your top floor, literally, it means if your project is inside your house, Just Let George Do it. From my perspective, there’s not much more to it.  However, given the number of times I am asked, this is what I do and some of what I don’t do. Yes, this has changed from a few years ago. I a slowing down a bit and have decided to eliminate some items that I technically can perform but choose not to do anymore.

  1. I can and do perform about 90% of every handyman task for items under your roof, meaning inside your house. But that doesn’t exclude outside repairs. Like pressure washing/updating decks, walkways and sides of your home. The 10% I don’t do is roofing, attic insulation, concrete walkways, window washing, and some other major projects.
  2. My clients have instant access 24 x 7 to a complete list of the types of projects I’m qualified to perform. It’s called the Just Let George Do It LIST. You can get a new, updated copy by scrolling down and clicking the link over there on the right side of this page. I’ve included all kinds of routine handyman work like electrical repairs, light plumbing, trim carpentry, computer help, Deck building/refinishing, etc.
  3. I’ve programmed a JavaScript into this website that lets my visitors type in a single word like ‘electrical’ and when the OK is clicked a dialog box tells them if I do electrical work or not. Very simple!

I’ve also excluded projects that technically I could do, but choose not to do.  For example, I no longer carry an extension-ladder on my new RAM ProMaster Hi-Top Van.  You may have noticed that there are no ladder racks so I can not carry an extension ladder. I’ve decided that for me personally, the risk of injury vs. the reward at my age is not worth it to climb tall ladders.  So, I don’t do roofing, gutters, chimneys, etc.  But I have roofers we can call that do these things full-time.

Plumbing clogs (and chimney sweeping) are also excluded as well as working on heating and air conditioning systems. However, I do install thermostats on almost any wired, thermostatically controlled system.  Exception: Carrier has a proprietary thermostat that makes it almost impossible for anyone who is not a Carrier dealer to install a thermostat from Lowes, Home Depot or Amazon. So if you want a nice new WiFi thermostat, just let George Do it. Or if your system is a Carrier, you’ll have to pay Carrier to supply and install it.

Outside painting of house and windows for single story homes only and I will paint/stain/refinish decks, gazebos, pergolas, trellises and outside doors.  and inside of your home, I do all walls, ceilings, trim, cabinets, etc. Inside your home, I paint walls, ceilings, trim, cabinets and I also have indoor scaffolding so those hard to reach two-story foyers are no problem. My indoor, clean and safe scaffolding also allows me to replace those high up chandeliers safely and quickly.

You may have furniture that needs repair or touch-ups.  I have a friend who does these things and does it absolutely perfectly.  Much better than I could offer, so I’m not offering to repair or touch-up furniture.

Coincidentally, my two hobbies are also services I offer to my clients. Woodworking and computers. Windows computers are my specialty from Windows XP to the newest Windows 10 (yes they skipped “9”).  Routers, wireless systems setups are a piece of cake for me. Upgrading your hard drive is a snap with my help. How about adding speedy Solid State Drive (SSD)? Installing a new display monitor? I’d be happy to help you with the hookup as well as the set up for optimum displaying your screen.  I don’t sell any computer parts or software – just my help. Most computer services are by the hour.

Projects that match my skills are numerous and I love doing them. Projects that last no more than a few days are perfect for me. Examples: installing a few outside or inside light fixtures, mounting your new flat screen and hiding all those unsightly cables in the wall or replacing the storm door or that bedroom door your teen kicked a hole in!  I do say, ‘no job is too small’ but I don’t say. ‘no job is too big’.  In fact, many projects are too big for me. Building home additions, full basement remodels, garage additions, general large remodeling are not for me. Smaller remodels, projects that last for up to a few days are fine, but not much larger than that. I can install a new toilet, vanity, sinks, faucets but not the tub.

Remember, give a call, text or write and I will come out and take a look at your project. I always want to see the project first, then provide a free, flat-fee price that is guaranteed not to change, unless you change the project’s scope or add tasks or the actual materials prices are more or less than quoted.  You should know that if you have me buy materials for you, I pay sales tax on all those materials I buy on your behalf because I do not SELL any materials myself.  I only pick them up for you as a courtesy and charge you the same amount I pay. That also means that you can provide any materials you want. I’m only selling a flat fee to install, mount, replace, setup, assemble or adhere what you buy.

My fees always include all of my anticipated expenses, to arrive on time, install your project professionally and complete it on time and within your budget. You never pay any advance labor fees.  For larger projects, I may ask for the cost of the materials in advance but no labor is ever paid until a project’s phase is completed. All payments are due on the same day that a project or phase is complete. Projects are discount-priced for payments by checks only. I deposit checks or pictures of checks or copies using a mobile deposit app and they are credited same day. Projects are priced without discounts for a credit card, PayPal, mailed checks and cash payments.

During 2014, I learned two valuable lessons from one project for a great client. We’ll call him Jeff. Jeff called and said he bought some 4×8 sheets of Formica laminate for his main bathroom walls upstairs.  He decided it was too much of a do-it-yourself job so he wanted me to give him one of my free flat-fee quotes to install it.  After all, I have the tools, the experience, etc, etc.   I thought no problem- how hard could it be? After all, I’ve put Formica on cabinet counter tops before and it was fairly easy to do.  Using contact cement, you just spread it evenly on the laminate and the wood counters and when it’s dry, you slap them together and that Formica would never ever move again. It shouldn’t be much different for walls, should it? Right. I never looked at the bathroom before I quoted, I just gave a flat price quote for one full day of labor, assuming that should suffice. Once I started the job, I discovered that the amount of cutting I had to do was about ten times more than I had thought. I had to cut out for lights, wall switches, mirrors and sink.  Lesson one learned.

Then I also discovered that Jeff bought Type 1 adhesive for ceramic tiles to adhere the laminate to the walls.  I told him I wasn’t sure about using ceramic tile adhesive because I had only used contact cement in the past.  He assured me that the Lowe’s guy said it would work fine.  I gave in and started the job. Right off the bat, we ran into our first problem. One of the Formica sheets was broken because of the way Lowes curled it up too tightly.  So we used my truck to go to Lowe’s to get a replacement piece.

Once I was got started, I carefully cut the shapes I needed and started to apply them to the walls using the Type 1 adhesive. This is where lesson two becomes apparent.  The cement did not stick properly to the laminate so some edges and areas had to be held in place by wood strips until the adhesive dried. I worked methodically around the room and got it all done. I actually performed the work in a few hours more than my original quote called for.

So the lessons learned were not going to be as bad as I thought and I was feeling pretty good about the project. That is, until a week later and at least 14 showers later (he has a son and they both shower in that bathroom daily) when I got a call from Jeff telling me that the Formica had developed a large bubble.  I scheduled a visit the next day to see what the problem was.  By the time I got there, more bubbles had erupted and there were now about 5 five major bubbles and one of the pieces above the vanity was starting to come down completely. This time I used my better judgment and brought contact cement with me to fix the bubbles as much as I could.

The section on a wall with a mirror, had to be completely removed and put back up using contact cement. The good news was that the mirror and the sides were already cut out so it simply was a matter of holding it for a few seconds using two people. The bad news was Jeff let his side slip and the piece broke in half so now we needed to go get yet another sheet from Lowes. To add insult to injury, Lowe’s was out of that design until a few days later so I had to come back for a third trip once they came in.  I convinced Jeff to let me take down the piece above the sink completely and do it right using contact cement when I returned.

The following week, Lowe’s got the laminate sheets in to match and I went and picked up the two new sheets for him. I had to start fresh and re-cut both pieces and then install them (of course using contact cement this time). All in all, I wound up with 24 hours of labor plus six hours of driving back and for a quoted eight hours of work. Without exaggerating, I figured I made about minimum wage for this job!

To recap, the second lesson is never do something using the wrong adhesive, especially when you know better.  My problem was I was not assertive enough with Jeff to tell him no. The good news for Jeff was I did not charge him a penny over my original quote. I’ve performed many more small projects for him since and I know him really well now.  I can freely advise him and say no when it’s appropriate. I will also never install laminate on walls again and I will not be shy about telling a new client that what she wants is not right.

Jeff is a great client and I thank him for all the projects he has allowed me to perform.
